This project was about creating a multifunctional addition that could be used for guest lodging, a family retreat, and an overflow workspace for consulting employees. In less than 600sf, we fit in two habitable rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The client hired us when construction was already underway. Basic massing and space planning was completed with another design firm. The client then hired Re:modern to design, develop, and advise on the final finishes, colors, and fixtures. We made the entire space feel bigger by enhancing connections to the outdoors.

A multi-phase modern renovation and addition to a beach house with sweeping ocean views. The original 1970’s house was a single vertical shaft. Our design intervention added horizontal spaces and elements to connect it more closely to the landscape.

Playroom / Guesthouse Addition

Project Location: Redwood City, California

With a growing family and busy work schedule, the homeowners contacted us to design a playroom/guesthouse for their bungalow home. The site was tight due to a pre-existing garage that encroached into required setbacks and a utility easement that limited how far we could build towards the back of the property. We navigated the City’s zoning constraints to determine the best massing for the addition and successfully completed a tailored design that was granted permit approval on the first try. Design features include: clerestory windows for abundant natural light, indoor/outdoor connection, and a pass-thru bar area for entertaining purposes.
